In 2004…
Peggy Powell was taking a six-week course on prayer at a local Dallas, Texas church. The married couple leading it gave an assignment to all of the students to find someone to pray with once a week for six weeks. Peggy, known as Hunny to her grandkids, thought of her friend Bobbie Pinson. But there was one problem, Peggy and Bobbie lived 45 minutes away, too far away to get together in person to pray with continued regularity.
So Peggy called Bobbie and asked if they could do an experiment and pray once a week on the phone together. They started praying the scriptures. Peggy would read a verse and pray it back to the Lord then Bobbie would read a verse and pray it back to the Lord, and back and forth.
One day Bobbie said to Peggy, “Peggy, we’re having so much fun praying the scriptures back to the Lord over our grandchildren, it would be selfish if we kept this to ourselves. I can think of three friends who would like this.” Peggy said she could think of three friends too, so she called these friends and asked if they would like to receive mailings of verses to pray for their grandchildren and they said yes.
And thus the Praying Grandmothers mailing was started. Peggy pulled together the mailing materials and Bobbie prayed over the mailings and topics to include. The mailings went out four times a year and included anywhere from 5 to 9 pages of prayers and resources for each mailing.
The prayer group that started with Peggy and Bobbie grew to include 77 praying grandmothers by 2021. This website, created in 2021, is a tool to ensure these resources created and compiled by Peggy continue on to serve the next generation of Praying Grandmothers. Peggy and Bobbie continue to talk by phone once a week to pray for their grandchildren, their cities, their nation, the other praying grandmothers, and anything else the Lord lays on their hearts.
